RUNNING DATA

How fast are you compared to other runners?

Running culture is deeply skewed by selection bias. The people you see on Strava and Reddit are disproportionately fast, which means the paces that feel "slow" in those communities tell a very different story in population terms. Enter your time to see both percentiles: where you rank among race finishers and where you rank in the general population, using data from over 107 million race results.

What is the average 5K time?

The global average 5K finish time is approximately 28:30 for men and 34:00 for women, based on analysis of over 107 million race results by RunRepeat (2023). The median times are slightly faster: 27:00 for men and 33:00 for women, reflecting the right-skewed distribution where more slower finishers pull the average up. These numbers have been gradually increasing over the past decade as the sport has attracted more recreational participants.

What is the average half marathon time?

The global average half marathon finish time is approximately 2:01 for men and 2:18 for women (RunRepeat 2023). The median times are slightly faster: 1:55 for men and 2:12 for women. A sub-1:45 half marathon places a male runner in approximately the top 20% of finishers, while sub-2:00 sits around the top 40%. For women, sub-2:00 is approximately top 20% and sub-2:15 is around the top 40%.

Frequently asked questions

For a complete beginner who has been running for less than three months, finishing a 5K at all is an achievement. Most beginner runners complete their first 5K in 30-40 minutes (men) or 35-45 minutes (women). A time under 35 minutes for men or under 40 minutes for women is a reasonable initial target. At parkrun events, the average finish time is approximately 28-30 minutes for men and 33-35 minutes for women, but these averages include experienced runners alongside beginners.

A sub-4-hour marathon places a male runner at approximately the 40th-45th percentile of all marathon finishers, meaning you are faster than roughly 55-60% of people who complete a marathon. For women, sub-4-hours is approximately the 30th percentile, meaning you are faster than about 70% of female finishers. In the general population, completing a marathon at any pace places you in an exclusive group: only about 0.5% of the US population finishes a marathon in any given year.

Treadmill speed in mph converts to pace using: pace (min/mile) = 60 / speed (mph). For example, 7.0 mph = 60/7 = 8:34 per mile. Common reference points: 6.0 mph = 10:00/mile, 8.0 mph = 7:30/mile, 10.0 mph = 6:00/mile. Note that treadmill running at the same speed typically feels slightly easier than outdoor running due to no wind resistance; a 1% incline approximates the energy cost of outdoor running.

For a complete beginner who has been running for less than three months, finishing a 5K at all is an achievement. Most beginner runners complete their first 5K in 30-40 minutes (men) or 35-45 minutes (women). At parkrun events, which attract a wide range of abilities, the average finish time is approximately 28-30 minutes for men and 33-35 minutes for women. The most important benchmark for a new runner is consistency, not speed. A programme like Couch to 5K, followed for 8-12 weeks, typically produces finish times in the 30-40 minute range. The median times are slightly faster (1:55 for men, 2:12 for women) because the distribution is right-skewed by slower finishers. For women, sub-4 hours is approximately the 30th percentile. In the general population, completing a marathon at any pace places you in an exclusive group: only about 0.5% of the US population finishes one in any given year. The average marathon finish time has been rising steadily (from about 4:15 in 2000 to 4:32 in 2023) as the sport attracts more recreational participants. Source: RunRepeat 2023, Running USA 2024.

Both comparisons are valid but answer different questions. Comparing to race finishers tells you how you rank among people who actively train and race, which is useful for setting goals. Comparing to the general population tells you how rare your ability is in absolute terms. A 30-minute 5K is roughly the 50th percentile among race finishers but approximately the 85th-90th percentile in the general population, where most people cannot run 5K without stopping. If you train for races, the finisher percentile is more actionable. If you are curious where you stand as a human, the population percentile is the honest answer. Running performance declines by approximately 0.5-1% per year after age 35-40, accelerating slightly after age 65-70. World Athletics age-grading factors quantify this precisely. For example, the age-grading factor for a 50-year-old male marathoner is approximately 0.87, meaning an 87% age-graded performance at 50 is equivalent to a 100% performance at peak age (approximately 28-32). In practical terms, a 3:30 marathon at age 50 is roughly equivalent in physiological achievement to a 3:03 marathon at age 30. Consistent training dramatically slows this decline.
