What does your UCAT score really mean for your application?
A UCAT total means nothing on its own. The score only becomes useful when you see it in the distribution of 30,000 candidates. Some universities use it as a threshold; others use it to rank. Enter your total to find out where you actually stand.

Frequently asked questions
The average total cognitive score is approximately 2480 out of 3600. A score of 2700 places you in roughly the 72nd percentile and makes you competitive for most UK medical schools. A score of 2900+ (89th percentile) is competitive for the most selective programmes, including Cambridge and Edinburgh.
A total of 2800 places you in approximately the 82nd percentile, meaning you scored higher than roughly four out of five candidates. This is a strong score that puts you above the threshold for most UK medical schools. Universities in the selective tier typically invite candidates with scores in the 2700-2900 range for interview.
Medical schools use UCAT scores in three main ways: as a threshold (minimum score below which they do not invite for interview), as a ranking tool (top N candidates invited), or as one holistic factor. The Medical Schools Council publishes a guide each year listing how each university uses the UCAT. SJT bands are used separately: most universities require Band 1 or 2.
The SJT is the fifth section of the UCAT, scored as a band (1-4). It tests professional judgement and values alignment. Band 3 or 4 can result in automatic rejection at selective universities, even if the cognitive score is exceptional. Band 1 (~top 20%) is the strongest result.
The UCAT can only be taken once per testing cycle (once per year). Most successful candidates begin UCAT preparation 6-8 weeks before their test date, using question banks and timed practice. The UCAT is a speed test as much as an aptitude test: approximately 30 seconds per question in Verbal Reasoning. Scores do not carry over between years, so a stronger score in a subsequent application cycle requires resitting.
UCAT score thresholds vary by medical school and change each year based on the applicant pool. As a general guide, schools such as King's College London and the University of Aberdeen have historically set higher thresholds (typically 2700+), while some other schools may progress applicants from a lower score. The Medical Schools Council publishes entry requirements annually, and individual school websites publish their own UCAT selection criteria.
UCAT and BMAT tested different skills and cannot be directly compared in difficulty. UCAT focused on verbal reasoning, decision making, quantitative reasoning, abstract reasoning, and situational judgement under time pressure. BMAT tested aptitude and skills, scientific knowledge, and writing ability. As of 2024, BMAT has been retired by Cambridge Assessment, and most UK medical schools that previously used BMAT now use UCAT or other assessments.
The UCAT testing window typically runs from July to late September each year for October UCAS applications. Most applicants sit the test in July or August. Sitting early (July) gives candidates more time to prepare for a resit in a future cycle if needed, though each cycle allows only one attempt. Preparation time is typically 4-8 weeks of structured practice. Results are available immediately after the test and are valid for one application cycle only.
